Our history

How the past has shaped our future

Our rich history of keeping industry moving began when the company was founded by Harry Hayward in 1919. Remarkably, Harry continued at the helm of J Hayward and Sons until 2002 when he sadly passed away aged 96.

Our Chairman is Harry’s son, Brendan, who still plays an active role within the company, along with his son, Managing Director, Sean Hayward.

The general side of our business consists mainly of carrying concrete and steel for blue chip companies including CPM Group, FC McCann, Stanton Bonna and EMR.

Our container operation hosts shipping companies such as Maersk and Medite and NYK, and we are proud to be carrying cargo as a preferred haulier for the likes of TK Maxx, Sainsbury’s and Goodyear to name but a few.

Sporting connections

Football has played a big part in our family, with Sean having previously played professional football for West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield Wednesday, and his brother Steve having played for Derby, Carlisle, Fulham and Barnsley.

Our company also has a strong affiliation with Everton FC, a club proud to be known as ‘The People’s Club’, mirroring Hayward’s philosophy.
